Non-Surgical Reflux Treatment

Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Internal Diseases and Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Cengiz Pata explains: “The non-surgical treatment method of reflux does not cause any incisions in the skin of the patients. It is entered through the mouth with a special endoscope. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an endoscopy room. It takes about 60-90 minutes. The patient does not feel pain. ”

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a disease that affects almost 25 percent of the population. It often manifests itself with complaints such as burning in the throat and chest, bitter taste in the mouth. The main disorder that causes the disease is the escape of stomach acid into the esophagus by the relaxation of the structure (sphincter), which consists of tightened muscles between the esophagus and stomach.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a chronic disease. The use of acid-suppressing drugs usually provides relief. However, in many patients, complaints start again after drug treatment is discontinued.

Why Should Endoscopic Method Be Used?

The permanent treatment of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is to narrow and strengthen the loose sphincter and make it functional. With this system, the sphincter is strengthened by suturing it endoscopically. No incision occurs on the skin. By entering through the mouth with a special endoscope, the intact stomach tissue is sutured to the loose area at the lower end of the esophagus with suture material, which we can describe as a medical staple. Thus, acid leakage is prevented.

Who is suitable for this surgery?

Patients older than 18 years of age, with sphincter laxity less than 3 cm (without hiatal hernia), and patients who need continuous medication are candidates for treatment.

How is Endoscopic Treatment Performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an endoscopy room. It takes about 60-90 minutes. After the procedure, a liquid diet should be taken and soft foods should be fed until recovery. Normal diet can be started within a few days and patient may return to his/her routine. Since anesthesia is used during the procedure, the patient does not feel pain. Afterwards, there may be a mild abdominal or sore throat for 2-3 days.
