VOICE DISEASES

Since voice, one of the basic tools of communication, is personal like fingerprints, a person’s voice is unique. However, our voices can be affected by many variables from time to time, from our emotions to the physical environment, from smoking to sleep patterns. This is manifested by a short-term hoarseness. Hoarseness, which exceeds 10-15 days on average, must be checked. Healthy and well-working vocal cords can recover in an average of two to three days when they are disturbed due to external factors. It is of great importance to consult a specialist in case of hoarseness that continues after flu and similar upper respiratory tract diseases and exceeds a week.

Diseases that may occur in the vocal cords can be simple and spontaneous reasons, as well as serious diseases that require major surgeries. Cancer precursor lesions are at the top of serious diseases. Since these lesions in the vocal cords can disrupt the vibration, it becomes almost impossible to distinguish the complaints of a simple or serious vocal disease.

Sinusitis, allergic rhinitis or allergic throat infections and reflux can affect the vocal cords. These diseases can also be congenital; Incomplete or adherent vocal cord, wound or cleft on it.

The treatment of hoarseness varies according to the disease. It is ensured that the surrounding tissues of the vocal cords are healthy in all diseases except cancer. Drug treatment is applied in cases of allergy, reflux, postnasal drip and similar conditions. If there is a lesion affecting the vocal cords, especially if cancer is suspected, the removed lesion should be examined pathologically after taking a piece from the vocal cord for sampling.

Voice therapy is used in the incorrect use of voice. With this way; Correct use of the muscles in the vocal cords and larynx, strength and endurance against the load, and the health of the covering tissues are provided. These exercises, applied by speech and language therapists, should be done at least once or twice a week. During sessions that last approximately 45-50 minutes, the patient works one-on-one with the therapist.

Anyone who wants to have a good voice can get sound therapy. Voice disorder is seen in 10-20 percent of the society. Looking at the occupational groups, this problem is mostly seen in teachers and about 40 percent of them have voice disorders. The rates of this problem are also very high among lawyers and imams. Boys have more vocal impairments than girls, due to their loud speaking habits. Voice changes are seen in both genders during adolescence, but with the effect of testosterone, a very serious change is experienced in males, with the effect of testosterone, the enlargement of the larynx, thickening of the muscles and the lengthening of the vocal cord occur.

Some surgeries cause vocal cord paralysis. In the treatment of vocal cord paralysis, neck surgeries are performed. Vocal cord paralysis is seen in people who have undergone surgery for a different reason. Damage to the vocal cord nerve can occur in thyroid, neck hernia surgeries and chest, lung and cardiac surgeries. Such unavoidable complications can be seen in one to five out of every 100 surgeries.
