Breast Cancer

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is an uncontrolled and irregular increase in the cells lining the mammary glands and ducts, continuing to multiply and collecting in various parts of the body, passing through the blood and lymph. It is one of the most common cancers on earth, after lung cancer. It is reported that one out of every eight women will be exposed to breast cancer at some time in her life.

A tumor can form in different parts of the breast. Most mammary tumors develop from the epithelium of the ducts that deliver milk to the nipple (ductal cancer). Others develop from the glandular cells (lobular cancer). There are also less common forms, including nonspecific cancer, sarcomas, and breast lymphoma. The tumor can grow locally, spread through the lymphatic system to the lymph nodes (regional metastasis), and can also spread through the body (distant metastasis)

How to Catch Breast Cancer in Time?

Regular annual preventive diagnostics can save many women’s lives. As a rule, for a long time a woman does not even suspect of its detrimental development, as she feels no pain or even discomfort. Changes in the breast become obvious, depending on the size of the breast and tissue, when the tumor grows to 1.5-2 cm. This means that the cancer is already approaching stage 2. If a woman delays further to see a doctor, the process may involve lymph nodes in the axilla, then the treatment becomes very difficult. Every woman from the age of twenty shall undergo medical examination once a year. It is especially important when planning pregnancy, using contraceptives or prolonged hormonal therapy, as well as if you have already been diagnosed with benign changes in the breast, such as cysts.

How to Treat Breast Cancer?

Once you have diagnosed with breast cancer, your doctor will recommend a personal treatment to you. The type of treatment you have will largely depend on the site and size of your cancer and whether it has spread, the type of the breast cancer you have. Possible main treatments consist of surgery, medicine treatment and radiotherapy.

  • Surgery: most cases usually starts with surgery and the aim of the surgery is to take out the tumor. If it is possible to remove only cancerous tumor this surgery is recommended rather than removing the whole breast. Lumpectomy operation, also called breast-conserving surgery, removes only the part of your breast that has tumor. In a mastectomy, doctors remove the whole breast. There are different types of mastectomies and lumpectomies. However, for each of them our highly-skilled surgical team will aim to give you the best cosmetic results.
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiotherapy uses waves with high energy to kill the cancerous part of the breast. Doctors also might recommend this method if the disease has spread. Radiotherapy may be useful with other treatments also. You may get radiotherapy to kill cancer cells which may be remain after surgery. In MedicaTurk we use the latest technology in radiotherapy unit to give you the best treatment

Hormone therapy blocks hormones that can incite cancerous tumor to grow. Especially estrogen, stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. This therapy may work by stopping the ovaries from making hormones, either through surgery or medication. Targeted treatments drugs targets the specific tumours and it promote the body’s immune system to help destroy cancer cells
