Gastric Sleeve

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

This is the most common weight loss surgery. It is also known as sleeve gastrectomy. The surgeon removes about 80% of your stomach, leaving a pouch the size of a banana. Surgery almost always uses minimally invasive laparoscopy and small incisions.

How Does It Work?

A smaller stomach means you consume less food. Your body absorbs fewer calories and nutrients. Your appetite may decrease due to changes in hunger signals sent to your brain.

Before Gastric Sleeve Surgery

In the weeks before surgery, you may need to start a program of physical activity and quit smoking.

Right before the procedure, you may have restrictions on what you eat, drink, and what medications you can take.

Now is a good time to plan ahead for your recovery from surgery. For example, ask for help at home if you think you need it.

Sleeve gastrectomy is done in the hospital. Depending on your recovery, your hospital stay may last from one to two nights.

After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

After a gastrectomy, your diet starts with sugar-free, non-carbonated liquids for the first seven days, then transitions to pureed foods for three weeks, and finally to regular foods for about three weeks. four weeks after surgery. You’ll need to take a multivitamin twice a day, a calcium supplement once a day, and vitamin B-12 injections once a month for life.

You will have regular medical check-ups to monitor your health for the first few months after your bariatric surgery. You may need lab tests, blood tests, and various tests.

You may experience changes as your body responds to rapid weight loss in the first three to six months after a gastrectomy, including:

  • Body aches
  • Hair thinning and hair loss
  • Mood changes
  • Feeling tired, as if you have the flu
  • Feeling cold
  • Dry skin

Healing Proces

After gastric bypass surgery, most patients can return to work within a week and some patients return to work within 3-4 days. However, different factors contribute to how quickly you can get back to work.

These factors include:

Type of Work – Returning to an office job is very different from returning to a construction job. The physical demands and level of activity required to do your job will affect how long you need to take off.

Overall healing process – Everyone heals differently and at their own pace. Returning to work depends on your individual recovery and whether you experience any complications that could prolong healing.

What are the Advantages of This Procedure

Compared with other bariatric surgeries, nasogastric tubes are simpler, faster, and safer. People with medical conditions that aren’t suitable for a longer procedure can often tolerate gastrectomy. Because surgery doesn’t realign your intestines, it’s also less likely to cause nutrition-related long-term complications.

Although the average weight loss with a gastric sleeve is slightly lower than with more complex weight loss surgeries, it still provides excellent health and weight loss results. This operation begins as the first step in a two-step weight loss surgery known as a duodenal switch. Surgeons started offering it as a standalone procedure after many people found that they didn’t need to complete part two.
