Patient Stories & News

Endoscopic Fundoplication has been applied around the world since 2010.

The first name that implements the treatment in Turkey, Yeditepe University Hospital Koşuyolu Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology Specialist Prof.Cengiz Pata Yeditepe University Koşuyolu Hospital Internal Diseases and Gastroenterology Specialist Prof. Cengiz Pata stated that the patient recovers after a 45 min to one hour endoscopy operation and said, “This is a permanent treatment method and the success rate is 90 percent. “We will completely solve the reflux problem with this treatment method.”

It is used very often in the world

Explaining that endoscopic fundoplication treatments have been used frequently in the world in recent years, Prof. Cengiz Pata said, “Reflux disease is a very common disease and affects almost 25 percent of the society. We do not have the chance to cure this chronic disease with drugs. The definitive treatment has been either surgery or, in recent years, some endoscopic anti-reflux (EART) treatment methods, which we call Endoscopic Fundoplication. In fact, one of them was a treatment method where we applied a high degree of electrical current to the lower end of the esophagus. We have used this method for years. We have achieved successful results in many of our patients. But of course, medicine is constantly developing and new treatments are emerging. Endoscopic Anti Reflux Treatment is one of them. In fact, it is one of the most frequently used treatment methods in the world these days, “he said.

We Will Solve the Reflux

Stating that they gave the patient general anesthesia and were discharged on the same day, Prof. Cengiz Pata gave the following information about the procedure:
“We put the patient to sleep completely, and the surgeon friends wrap the esophagus from the outside and narrow it. We also apply the technique of narrowing the area by applying some stitches that can be called staples to the esophagus from the inside with endoscopy. Since there is no surgery or incision in the abdomen, we discharge the patient on the same day. While the success of the endoscopic laser methods we used in the past is around 50-60 percent, the success of this method is around 80-90 percent. We have applied it to two patients so far, and the results are very successful. We immediately discharged the patients. I think we will solve the reflux problem in this way. ”

Can We Apply This Treatment In Every Reflux Case?

Underlining that the treatment is permanent, Prof. Cengiz Pata said, “It is a treatment that is more resistant and we can achieve successful results in the long term. I think we will prefer more in the future. We do not saying that we will be able to treat every reflux case Many symptoms can be confused with reflux, so a definitive diagnosis should be made. This requires an accurate gastroscopy, an accurate PH meter test and, if necessary, a manometry test. After these, if there is a diagnosis of reflux, it is time to choose the right treatment. We will first choose the right patient and then apply a correct treatment, “he said.

It’s A Procedure That Takes 45 Minutes

Stating that the procedure is extremely easy for the patient, Prof. Cengiz Pata said, “We give our patient to sleep by giving a light medicine as if the patient came to endoscopy. During the procedure, we enter through the throat with a device slightly larger than normal gastroscopy. We apply a procedure that takes between 45 minutes and one hour with general anesthesia. After the procedure, the patient is observed for 4 to 6 hours. If everything is fine, we discharge the patient. “The patient may have only a little sore throat that day,” he said.

What Causes Reflux?

Explaining that Gastroesophageal Reflux disease has spread like an epidemic, Prof. Cengiz Pata said, “It is seen in one out of 4 people in the society. A serious health problem; Why did it become more common? Of course, extensive epidemiological studies are needed to be precise. However, obesity is a serious problem and we are constantly gaining weight. In comparison with Europe, Turkey is almost the first in obesity. Obesity has the primary effect on reflux. We do not spare time for exercise and sports. Our eating habits have also changed, we consume dry foods, which we can call fast food, more often than classic juicy foods. We know that these cause an increase in reflux. The most important precaution is to eat less and often. If you drink even water, you should be careful about it. It is important to have a light dinner. Stop eating and drinking 2 hours before bedtime. “Sleeping on a slightly higher pillow will provide comfort to the patients.” he warned.
